Welcome to Prairie Woods, the site of wood turner Bill Neff. When people think of the prairie, they think of wide-open flat lands. Yes, the prairie is that, but the prairie also has a variety of trees including elm, oak, maple, cottonwood, ash, black walnut, locust, osage orange and even black cherry.
I don’t like using “exotic” woods but prefer the local native woods, which can vary from plain to spectacular. I get wood from various sources including weather damaged trees, firewood from my own back yard or other “urban salvage.”
I find working with wood is like working with people. Each piece of wood is unique, and quite frequently has a mind of it’s own. It’s sometimes a challenge to find and expose the inner beauty, but it is an enjoyable and rewarding process.
